Froelick Gallery is pleased to present Laurie Danial’s latest body of work, Beauty and The Long Walk Home. A solo exhibit of recent paintings on panel and paper. Laurie Danial’s abstractions are process-driven; her work is intuitive, experimental, and dictated by her day-to-day concerns, visual experiences, and collected ephemera of looking and feeling. This new series of exuberant paintings explores improvisation and unmediated gesture, delving into a realm that Danial considers “Play,” a place of intuition that allows for “following the hand rather than a plan.”
Laurie Danial writes: “The theme of my current body of work, is a metaphor for my creative process: The search for an image that expresses my aspirations, and the long struggle it often takes to bring that image into being. What I am searching for I call beauty, though not beauty in its traditional sense. The beauty I pursue is in defiance of cliché and perfection. It is subjective, and I have a penchant for finding it in what others might consider commonplace or ugly… The ‘long walk home’ is the slow process of making and unmaking that ensues. ‘Home’ is the image I finally arrive at, one that is formally sound and asks for nothing more.”
Danial received her art education from the Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland State University. She has been featured in numerous solo and group shows regionally and nationally since 1991, including exhibitions at G. Gibson Gallery (Seattle, WA), Portland Art Museum, Oregon Center for Contemporary Art (Portland, OR), Schneider Museum (Ashland, OR), University of Oregon (Eugene, OR).
